Glenn Almany of the National Center for Scientific Research will speak at a ReefTalk at 6 p.m. tonight at the Hamakua Mac Nut Factory in Kawaihae.
Almany will talk about how working with traditional fishing communities in the Pacific can help others understand the local and regional benefits of community based marine management initiatives.

Almany grew up in Southern California, joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17, and spent several years traveling the Pacific in a submarine. After leaving the Navy, he went to San Francisco State University, where he received his Bachelors in Marine Biology, and Oregon State University, where he received a PhD in Ecology. Since graduating in 2002, he has worked as a research fellow at James Cook University in Australia.
He recently accepted a permanent research position with the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France.
His research focuses broadly on coral reef fisheries.

to elect chairman
The Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets at 11 a.m. Friday at the USDA/NRCS Waimea Field Office, 64-1032 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 201. A chairman will be elected during the meeting.
Cancer retreat
planned in Hawi
Kokolulu Farm, in Hawi, will host a special group retreat of hope and empowerment for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis, from Aug. 12 to 16.
Scholarships are available to Hawaii Island residents; reservations are required.

Keiki Run a success
The fifth annual Kona Commons Aloha Keiki Run was held June 15. Presented by the Kona Marathon and Family Runs, more than 350 children, ages 1 to 15, participated in events ranging from 100-yard dashes to 1-mile runs. Each was awarded with a goodie bag, T-shirt and event medal.
Kahakai Elementary, the school with the most enrolled race participants, was awarded $500, to be used to purchase sporting equipment at Sports Authority.

Kilauea Drama and Entertainment Network has added a 2:30 p.m. Saturday performance of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
Performances continue to be scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
